Exciting 5.0 out of 5 stars Review of the book Voices of the Stars by Rowena Whaling!

This review comes from internationally famous Oberon Zell - Founder of the Church of All Worlds, (begun in the1960s ), serving as the church's Primate ever since, Publisher of the Green Egg magazine, Author, acclaimed sculptor, Headmaster of the Grey School Of Wizardry, and holds academic degrees in sociology, anthropology, clinical psychology, teaching, and theology. He was on the research team for Marion Zimmer Bradley's classic novel, "The Mists of Avalon" - among other things...

"The best Arthurian novel. Ever!"
"I just finished reading "Voices of the Stars." What a brilliant and amazing book! Rowena Whaling has the most complete and accurate grasp of history, myth, and magick that I have seen in any Arthurian novel (and I've read them all)--even greatly surpassing Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Mists of Avalon." I love the Bardic snippets of Rowena's own lovely poetry/songs throughout; and I also really appreciate her insightful portrayals and perspectives of all the characters in the story--even bit parts. And her continuation of the saga decades beyond what anyone else has even attempted enters completely new territory. I have dog-eared dozens of pages to return to later for quotes and references I expect to use in my own books, and I can't wait to read the next in the series!"

"I LOVED the work.  I read what you sent.  The magick was so powerful that I left my computer and did some right away, packing those pounding words into my mental work.
What can I say.  The work has got the touch."

from Silver (RavenWolf) - author: "Solitary Witch: The Ultimate Book of Shadows for the New Generation,
To Ride A Silver Broomstick: New Generation Witchcraft,
To Stir a Magick Cauldron: A Witch's Guide to Casting and Conjuring (RavenWolf To Series)".

"Voices of the Stars conveys both the ambience and the substance of the Ancient Mysteries."

"While the title of her book is “Voices of the Stars,” its author, Rowena Whaling, has both feet planted firmly on the ground in terms of solid historical research. This is historical fantasy at its scholarly best."

from John Wisdom Gonce - author "The Necronomicaon Files"

"Rowena is a masterful craftswoman. Her knowledge—drawn from extensive research and living experience—spins voices from beyond the veil to life, taking the reader on a quest into places where hearts beat in rhythm with a familiar tale re-membered into new reflections of Truth and Fate.  Her compelling narrative opens the reader to whispers of shades hinting at the foundations of Mystery and the roots of human foible.  A legend very much alive and roiling with Magic!"

from Shana Robinson - co-author "Shamanism and the Spirit Mate"

"Voices of the Stars" is a beautiful rendition of the Arthurian legend! Wonderful wordsmithing by a new author, Rowena Whaling. The story telling is historically accurate, and yet fantastically spun as Morgan of the Wood, Arthur's sister, narrates the tale of the Old Ways, and the characters of the age as they each relate their versions of the events in Arthur's growth and reign as King of the Clans. This is a tome to enjoy again and again. I am sure that each reading will reveal more details of this story and add to the enjoyment of the read. Give yourself a treat, and settle in with a teapot of your favorite tea for an enchanting telling of the Arthurian legend.

Review from reader 'goldenmom'

In these days of “Games of Thrones,” The Lord of the Rings” and “Hunger Games,” it is hard to imagine what new mythic, fantasy saga could possibly be told, and even if told, would be interesting enough to draw and hold a jaded fantasy reader’s attention.  There are two basic types of fantasy novels being produced nowadays: ones that are the sole product of the author’s imagination like the Lord of the Rings and those with a connection to a defined historical or mythical person or period.  While both types can be enthralling, the ones with a historical connection can be enchanting at a deeper level as they have an anchor in the common memory and can inspire further research and study.  “Voices of the Stars” is an enchanting saga which is built thematically upon the Arthurian legends and yet is not tied to those 13th century stories.  For a historically based novel to work as fiction, it must go beneath the surface of the historical events and probe the shadowy depths of the agendas, motives and passions that generated those events. “Voices of the Stars” accomplishes this task in several ways including character development, thematic harmony and poetical/lyrical addendums.

What makes a good fantasy novel truly enchanting is the depth of character development that draws the reader deeply into the lives of the characters and lets them feel empathy for their situation.  Author Rowena Whaling has done a magnificent job of character development in “Voices of the Stars” as she develops the story of Morgan of the Woods and in the words of the main character “weaves, entwines and spreads like the gossamer threads of Arachne-ultimately and forever changing the meaning of events as they truly were.”

The elements of magic, myth and the supernatural are also woven together into this epic story with great care to create a unique harmony of the historical and the mythic that carries the reader into the mist-shrouded world between the worlds where Druids chant, dragons fly and the god and goddess make their ethereal presence known.  There are also the all-too-human elements of love, violence, sex, relationships and betrayal to mention a few that let the reader further enter into the inner world of the characters.  This literary treatment gives the characters humanity and makes them believable.

One further positive literary element found within “Voices of the Stars” is the author’s use of epic poetry and songs throughout the text.  The author, a gifted songwriter and musician, has been producing her own musical magic for decades and weaves this element into her storyline with literary grace and elegance.

All of these elements combine in Whaling’s epic story to create a story that will excite you, prompt tears of joy, or simply arouse your sense of wonder.  “Voices of the Stars” takes one on a spiritual as well as literary journey and will inspire you to read more about the Arthurian legends as well.  The second book of the trilogy”Rowena of the Glen” continues the saga to a new time and place.  Whaling is to be commended for her masterful work and I am certain that she will eventually have a place among the great fantasy novelists of our time.

First of all I must say that this is the BEST BOOK ON KING ARTHUR that I have ever read and I've read every single book about this time period that I can find. It is absolutely enchanting.  I found myself reading it so fast because I enjoyed it too much, and then it was over!  Oh woe is me! How can I ever make the wait for the next book?  Let me tell you, this book is everything you want regarding the Arthur legend and more.  Ms. Whaling has done excellent research.  She has woven together so much true history and places that it is amazing.  I must say that I was quite pleasantly surprised to find out Arthur's heritage.  I won't say more about this you'll have to read the book to find out all I can say is that you will be amazed.  I loved the way that she wrote all the characters especially Merlin and Morgan.  As for Arthur's evil sister, Morganna, I found myself actually enjoying her wickedness.  She does such horrible things and you think, how much farther is she gonna go to get what she wants?  Well dear readers, you'll just have to read it to find out.  Just let me say that she outdid her evil self!  This book is a MUST READ for anybody interested in the legends of King Arthur.  This has got to be the closest to the truth that is out there!  The only bad thing I can say is that it's just too good to read slowly and relish!  You will find yourself turning page after page, excited to see what comes next.  I am putting this book at the top of my FAVORITE BOOKS list. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Please Ms. Whaling, get to work! Your readers are waiting!!!!!

On 'VOICES OF THE STARS':  Ms Whaling has taken the obscure and often somewhat tilted legends of Arthur, King of All the Britons, those closest to him and their decendents and woven their telling into a beautiful and understandable tale of love, power, and deceit.

Ms Whaling is a gifted writer who for the first time [that I know of] in all my years of seeking - though I be well into my Cronedom - has managed to put into words a logical, linear and totally understandable explanation of the histories, beliefs and legends of our ancesters and The Goddess as well as Christian and other major faiths; she has managed to tie them all together into an underlying ONENESS as I've always known in my heart is the way it is meant to be. I am very much looking forward to Book Two.

Goddess Blessings on You;

Best Ever!

Aside from being the most historically accurate, Rowena Whaling has woven such grace and beauty in this story that it makes me hunger for more.  Truly this is the best written ever and can't be topped by any other author.

The Arthurian Legend has long been one of my favorite adventures in the various tellings.  This version however, takes you into the inner lives, thoughts, histories and settings of the characters.  The fascinations of the time, the chaos of the era, the historic background and dynamic images painted by Rowena in her writing are truly gifts to any reader.  I wish there were 6 stars to present.  This book series is worth them!

"Voices of the Stars" was a terrific reading experience. I read a great deal of literature pertaining to King Arthur and this is one of the best. Whaling gives multiple points of view in the novel, bringing the many characters to vivid life. She also presents the reader with some interesting spiritual insights as well. I highly recommend this book to readers of Historical Fantasy and Arthurian stories.
